Information for PI's

Missing In America Network Preferred Investigator Program

Connecting Families with Ethical, Compassionate Private Investigators

When a loved one goes missing, families are often overwhelmed with uncertainty and faced with difficult decisions. One of the most common questions we hear is:

"Can you recommend a private investigator?"

To help answer that question, Missing In America Network created the Preferred Investigator Program.

This nationwide initiative brings together licensed private investigators who have demonstrated a commitment to professionalism, ethical practices, compassionate communication, and family-centered service. While every missing person case is unique, our goal is to connect families with investigators who understand the sensitivity of these cases and who share our mission that no family searches alone.

Why We Created This Program

Families searching for a missing loved one deserve access to professionals they can trust.

The Missing In America Network Preferred Investigator Program was developed to:

  • Connect families with experienced, licensed private investigators.
  • Promote ethical and transparent investigative practices.
  • Encourage trauma-informed communication with families.
  • Foster collaboration between investigators, advocates, and law enforcement when appropriate.
  • Increase access to professional investigative services through discounted rates or other benefits for families referred by Missing In America Network.

Our goal is not simply to create a directory, but to build a network of professionals committed to serving missing person families with integrity and compassion.

Our Standards

Every investigator accepted into the Missing In America Network Preferred Investigator Program has committed to our Preferred Investigator Standards & Code of Ethics, which includes commitments to:

  • Professional integrity
  • Honest and transparent communication
  • Compassionate, family-centered service
  • Respect for confidentiality
  • Ethical investigative practices
  • Collaboration with families and appropriate partners
  • Respect for law enforcement investigations
  • Ongoing professionalism

Investigators participating in this program also agree to offer a benefit to families referred through Missing In America Network  a complimentary consultation, and one or more of the following: reduced retainer, discounted rates, payment options, or pro bono assistance in select cases.

Important Notice

Participation in the Missing In America Network Preferred Investigator Program signifies that an investigator has completed our application process and agreed to uphold our Standards & Code of Ethics.

Missing In America Network does not supervise, direct, or guarantee the services or outcomes provided by any participating investigator. Families are encouraged to evaluate all professional services to determine what best meets their individual needs.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at HELP@missinginamericanetwork.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.

     Absolutely.

Participation in the Missing In America Network Preferred Investigator Program does not change the way you operate your business. You remain an independent private investigator or agency and maintain full control over your services, business practices, and client relationships.

     No.

Preferred Investigators establish their own fees, contracts, and payment terms directly with their clients.

As part of the program, investigators agree to disclose their pricing clearly and to honor any discounts or special accommodations they choose to offer to families referred through Missing In America.

     No.

You decide which cases you accept based on your availability, expertise, geographic area, and business considerations.

    No.

Unless a separate written agreement is made for a specific project, investigators are hired directly by families. Any financial arrangements are between the investigator and the client.

    No.

The Preferred Investigator Program provides visibility within our network and opportunities for referrals when appropriate, but referrals are not guaranteed.

     No.

Investigators maintain complete control over their investigative methods and professional judgment. We simply ask that investigators uphold the Program Standards & Code of Ethics and communicate professionally with families.

     Yes.

Participation is voluntary. You may withdraw from the program at any time by notifying Missing In America Network.

Nothing in this program limits an investigator’s ability to operate an independent business or establish their own fees, contracts, or investigative practices, provided they remain consistent with applicable laws and the Missing In America Network Preferred Investigator Standards & Code of Ethics.

Checklist for Hiring a Private Investigator

With the internet, it has brought about a new age of investigators known as "web sleuths".

Web sleuths are not licensed private investigators and not bound by the license authorities rules and regulations in the states they reside. Some may be very talented, some may be scams.  It unfortunately is up to you as the client to make sure you are entering into an agreement with a reputable licensed investigator. Below is a checklist of items you may want to check off during the decision making process.  If in doubt, please seek out the advice of an attorney.

As a general rule, I would be very cautious of any private investigator that cold calls or private messages  families of missing persons and tries to pressure them into hiring him/them without a contract.
